Weenen

Weenen “The Place of Weeping” was laid out in April 1838. The town’s layout was in the Voortrekker grid pattern with large ‘erven’ (plots) stretching from street to street which are all serviced by the original canal network.Due to the comparative isolation of Weenen since it’s inception, the village remains locked in time as the Province’s best Voortrekker ‘dorp’. There are a number of historical buildings including the Voortrekker homestead Museum, the Dutch Reformed Church and Weenen Primere School, which is the 2nd oldest school in KZN. Weenen’s Game Reserve has both black and white Rhino, giraffe, zebra and herds of antelope and is also the venue of the annual Weenen Classic cycle race.
